Friday Night Lights

On a Friday night in the fall, it would not be unusual to find me at a high school football game.  My husband and I try to attend as many home games at Lakeland Christian School as we possibly can.   We don’t have a child in the game.  As a matter of fact, we don’t even have a child at the school.  Our two are long gone from this campus.  But, the memories are still there.

I guess when you invest over 15 years of your life into an institution, it becomes “home”.

That was the feeling I had as I sat in the bleachers at the first home football game.  This is home, my community.

I tend to observe people more than the game and this is what caught my eye that Friday night.

  • Classmates of my son and daughter at the game with their children, new families just starting
  • Students I remembered from my days as a substitute teacher with their young families, some of them on staff
  • Peers holding the chubby little hands of grandchildren, these are the men and women my husband and I  shared the stands with as we cheered for our sons and daughters years ago
  • Elementary aged children playing under the bleachers just as they did when my son and his friends were elementary students in the 1990’s when soccer ruled the school
  • Cheerleaders and football players who were little kids when my two were still at LCS
  • The game announcer who was my son’s youth soccer coach

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In the movie The Lion King, its called the circle of life.  I’m not sure what to call it . . . this movement of time and of people.  I just know that it is comforting and it makes me smile.
