A Few Of My Favorite Things About October

If you’re a native Floridian like me, you know that Autumn is simply a date on the calendar.  It’s not a true season like other places around the country.  October is really just an extension of Summer—Summer Part Two if you will. Oh, sometimes the temperatures will dip all the way down to the mid-80’s, but, for the most part, it still feels like summer.  That is why my husband and I like to escape to the mountains of North Carolina every October.

We enjoy the crisp, cooler air in the mountains.  The colors are more pronounced, not like the transition from green to less green to brown in Central Florida.  It’s as if God himself has taken a giant paintbrush to the deep green mountain landscape.  He uses a palette of orange, red and yellow, dotting a tree here and a tree there each day until the mountain is a fire of color.  It looks like someone has spread a fuzzy, autumn quilt over the outlines of the mountains.  Sometimes, He will sprinkle a little bit of snow, adding a sparkling touch.  Sometimes He will spread a blanket of fluffy white clouds, covering up parts of the mountain.  It is exhilarating to witness the ever-changing daily show.

Here are some more of my favorite things about October in the mountains.

  • Mountain views
  • Fall colors
  • Pretty leaves
  • Pumpkins
  • Fall decorations
  • Mums
  • Wearing sweaters
  • Hot apple cider
  • Pumpkin-flavored everything
  • Crisp, cool, air
  • Working on puzzles
  • Fall festivals and fairs
  • Apples
  • Country drives
  • Corn mazes
  • Walks Without Sweating
  • Nature
  • First Chili of the season
  • Cozy nights by the fire
  • Gathering with family and friends

Autumn is a special time of the year, especially in the mountains.  It is a time of reflection, a time to look back on the year and remember the things which made the year special.  As we get deeper into the season, we are reminded to thank God for all of the beauty and bounty He has bestowed on us, even if it has been a rough year.  Fall, with all of it’s jewel tones, crisp, cool air and gatherings with family and friends gives us a chance to store up beautiful memories to carry us through the cold, dark days of winter.  Even if it gets down to the 40’s at home.

What’s your favorite thing about October?  Do you live somewhere where the seasonal changes are evident?

  1. I love autumn too and everything you mentioned. It’s my favorite season. Although the past few years in Tennessee, Autumn has seemed to pass us right by. This year we had a record breaking HOT October with temperatures still in the mid to upper 90s and the heat index often in the 100s. Only in Tennessee can it drop from the 90s to the low 40s in just a few hours time! It looks like we’re going from using the air conditioner straight to having to turn the heat on. It was like that last year too. I was hoping for a few weeks of getting to open the windows!!!!! We’re not seeing any color change at all where we live (not yet anyway).

  2. Yes, it’s been an unbelievable hot October here. Several day of heat indexes in the low 100s! I have lived in Nashville all my life and this wasn’t anything like the Octobers I remember growing up.
